The pilbara rock monitor
inhabits the arid coastal and interior areas in the Pilbara region of
Western Australia. These monitors start
off as red headed vibrantly patterned hatchlings, and gradually make
the ontogenic change to a red monitor with white spots. This
helps the monitors blend in with the red rock habitat on which they
live. They are lightning fast and can climb rapidly over vertical
rock surfaces. They will hide in rock cracks and will wait until
they spot prey, which they will chase down and overpower. This is
a very entertaining activity to observe and setting these guys up in a
naturalistic enclosure results in hours of entertainment. They
are relatively rare in collections and we are very excited to work with
them.
